japan – why it’s so important to me to help

I will never forget the summer I got the phone call from my highschool Japanese language teacher letting me known I was one of the lucky few who was going to Wanouchi, Japan. I – was – pumped.

So much of that trip went by as a blur, but when I sit and remember that trip it seems like yesterday. I managed to take 8 rolls of photos while I was there with one of my first cameras.

One of the most vivid memories I have is flying into Japan, we were flying into Tokyo International, and I remember having the window seat. I looked out and could see the top of Mount Fuji above the clouds. It was breath taking. It was emotional and inspiring.

It is hard to describe the beauty of Japan and what I saw. It was incredible to goto a part of Kyoto, and see the Geisha walking down the street on the left, but mass sky scrapers on the right. The old and new mesh together in Japan in such a beautiful way. You feel as though you can go back in time, and then leap ahead into the future.  Japan brings out the emotions inside of you, such as when you look out into the city of Hiroshima, and you can see the concrete building of the A-dome, the only building left standing after the atomic bomb – and your horizon is filled with present day 21st century. It is hard to imagine Hiroshima decimated by destruction and war, humans just struggling to survive.

I don’t have to imagine anymore, my TV has provided me with all the imagery I could have ever wanted. It broke my heart. The beautiful Japan I remember is being washed away before my eyes, the kind hearted people I know are scared, unknown and desperately need help. How can I, just one person half a world away help?
