melanie + tyson | edmonton destination wedding photographer

This may be a long post… So brace yourselves.

I remember when I got the initial email about a potential wedding abroad – I get quite a few emails so I didn’t really hold my breath for too long. I tend to get my hopes up, I begin to dream and imagine what the day would be like; and well I work in an industry with some incredibly talented people and you don’t always fit the shoe you could say.

This particular wedding was for Phoenix, Arizona. I have never been to Arizona minus the airport. However having just photographed a wedding in Texas, and previously I have photographed weddings in Las Vegas I knew that the desert held a special place in my heart. There is something unmistakably beautifully about the sun setting against red rock. Nothing; and I mean *NOTHING* compares to a sunset in the desert.

Then it happened; Melanie booked me with only a bit of notice and I was going to wrap up my season photographing a wedding which would turn into one that may rank in the top 3 experiences of my career.

Don’t get me wrong either – every wedding I approach with the mindset that I want it to be different; I don’t believe in cookie cutter experiences and I go into every photography experience almost under prepared. Don’t freak out when I say that; I don’t like to have expectations for a day because every wedding day can change. Nothing remains the same. Things can always go sideways and be altered. There is something inside me that brings out the creativity when I get to just let my imagination go. When I just let the ideas naturally flow, when my couples inspire me, when the location that day speaks to me I like to seize it. I know that may sound cheesy; but it’s true. I love to let the story of the day be truly represented in photos. You can’t pose love, I believe in capturing it and helping place you in beautiful locations.

I scouted locations for this wedding and I knew I wanted to send Melanie and Tyson home with images that reflected Phoenix and Arizona. I found red rock. Cacti. I found the desert. Melanie and Tyson; I don’t even know where to begin with these two. They are special; and for me to not be able to put it into words how I feel is rather rare. Kind, appreciative, unique, one in a million are some words that come to mind.

This day was about them – their love. Their journey. Their beginning and the start to a beautiful story. Surrounded by love they exchanged heart felt and tear jerking vows. Their family was never far from their minds and it was a big part of the day. So many made the journey to Arizona so you never questioned for a minute how deep the love ran.

Melanie and Tyson – gosh, I honestly can not say thank you enough for taking me on this journey with you; to be able to be apart of your story. You’ve touched my heart and career in a way that I may never be able to truly say thank you or find a way to repay you. I wish you both an eternity of happiness. Thank you.

kate + ian | edmonton wedding photographer

I got to spend a few hours with Ian and Kate on their wedding day and we were truly blessed with a beautiful afternoon. The sun shone, snow melted and we managed to capture a few portraits of this adorable couple inside the beautiful Edmonton Ice Castle.

I couldn’t believe how beautiful and unique this location was. Cheers and hats off to Edmonton for bringing such a stunning attraction to our city. Winter weddings can be a bit daunting, even scary to try and plan with all the “what-ifs”, however days like the one Kate and Ian had were a very gentle reminder that the risks are so worth it.

Congratulations to you both and thank you for trusting me on your big day!

edmonton workshop | may 14th, 2016

It’s here….finally!…

I am excited to announce that I will be hosting my second solo workshop this coming May!

I absolutely love to teach and help other photographers – it’s nice to meet so many new aspiring and veteran photographers and chat shop, inspire one another and leave the day feeling confident and ready to take on the season.

Here is some information for the workshop:

Where is the workshop held? The workshop will be hosted in my home. It’s a relaxed informal atmosphere that lets you get comfortable.

Who is this workshop for? This workshop is going to be geared towards primarily wedding and couples photographers. You’re looking to spruce up your business, maybe inject some new marketing ideas, or approach your branding from a new angle. We do finish the day with a styled shoot (something I love to do and the workshop explains why); so you should be comfortable with your camera.

What will be covered? Marketing, branding, pricing and plenty of time for open discussion and asking questions. I make sure that attendance numbers are low so that you can walk away with your individual questions answered. I also love knowing that classmates interact, build friendships and create a network of support. The nice part is past workshop students have built incredible friendships, and I love seeing it. We will end the workshop with an awesome bridal photo shoot – working with some of my favourite vendors, including Akiko Floral Artistry who has created some of the iconic floral wreaths you’ve seen in past shoots.

What NOT to expect: This isn’t a business hand out. I’m not going to give you a starter package for a photography company. I will share my resources to help YOUR business grow. I will try to provide you with the tools needed to leave inspired and feeling CONFIDENT entering the photography world. Please do not expect to learn my editing because that is something I do keep private; yes I will help as much as I can with Photoshop and Lightroom, however I will not share specific presets or walk you through an image.

Cost: $415+ GST – To register please email jfyphotography@gmail.com

If you have questions please do not hesitate to ask, I can be reached at jfyphotography@gmail.com

megan & korey | edmonton wedding photographer

Megan and Korey were married last summer. 2015 was the year of Megan’s; I’m quite sure I had 4 Megan brides throughout the year – ironically the previous year, I had another Megan and Korey…and the Megan’s were best friends….in each other’s weddings. Yep – true story!!

We had a gorgeous day for an intimate ceremony surrounded by all family and friends, formal photos then took place along the North Saskatchewan river near the Shaw Conference Centre. The engagement session for these two was hilarious and relaxed, so naturally the wedding day was no different. The reception was beautiful, a mixture of gold and navy accents. Many laughs and great stories were shared; and the final dance celebrated with a kiss under a sea of confetti!

megan & eldon | fernie wedding photographer

Megan and Eldon were married on one of coldest and gloomiest days in the mountains just outside Fernie British Columbia at Island Lake Lodge. Some times it was snowing, some times it was raining – we even had a small glimpse of sunshine once in a while.  It was an intimate ceremony over looking a beautiful pond, the rockies were our back drop. It was absolutely stunning and truly incredible. The place had such a cool (and I know that’s a strange word to describe it) feel to it. You know how in the movies they always talk about wood land faeries and creatures like that? I think this is one of those places which would inspire a mind to believe it. The trees created beautiful canopies, and the feeling of truly being surrounded in a valley is what did it.

So if you’re a bride and groom, looking for a location that truly is magical and will leave you feeling out of this world, you must check out Island Lake Lodge. Enough of my ramblings, enjoy this blog post!
